Happy Monday everyone!
I hope I gave you lots of ideas for your Sophia outfits on the inspiration board last week. I got so inspired by all the options that I’m now planning on making a lace version to sew-a-long with you all and will hopefully have it finished by the end!
So today we discuss fabrics and what you need so with out further a do let’s get on with the sew-a-long!
FABRICS
Firstly – here’s the requirement table for how much you will need…
I made my first Sophia in this amazing Tilda cotton from White Tree Fabrics. I wanted a matching set and this gives the outfit a gorgeous classic vintage style. It is 110cm wide so I had to improvise a bit, because of this my Sophia skirt is more narrow than the pattern but I think it works well.
So let’s look at some other options…
COTTONS…
ONE | TWO | THREE | FOUR | FIVE | SIX
ONE | TWO | THREE | FOUR | FIVE | SIX
TAFFETA…

LACE…
(you will need an underlining but don’t worry I will do a bonus tutorial on this at the end!)
ONE | TWO | THREE | FOUR | FIVE | SIX
OTHERS…
ONE –Tartan | TWO – Sequin | THREE – Corduroy | FOUR – Chambray | FIVE – Scuba | SIX – Tweed
And the great thing about Sophia? You can mix and match these fabrics… try a lace top with a tweed skirt or a cotton skirt and a sequin top – there are so many options!
Now you’ve sorted your fabric out let’s see what else you need to gather together to make Sophia:
- The Sophia pattern by Simple Sew (free with Issue 19 of Love Sewing Magazine)
- 12″ concealed zip
- Interfacing – 0.5m for waistband
- Fabric scissors or rotary cutter & mat
- Paper scissors
- Pattern weights (optional)
- Tailors chalk /pens
- Pins (lots of them!)
- Matching thread & bobbin (good quality)
- Sewing machine
- Iron + Ironing surface
- Sewing machine feet – Invisble zip foot, regular zip foot & straight stitch/quilting foot (all optional but very useful to follow the sew-a-long tutorial with)
