Good day sunshine gang!
How lovely is the weather?! I adore Spring so much and I’ve even made a valiant effort to make a great start to my Spring cleaning – the kitchen is spotless and I’ve cleared out my wardrobe inspired by the #WAChallenge2015! Another car boot selling day is on the cards methinx! 🙂
I have also been loving my weekly sewing classes at Resurrection Boutique in Archway… Yuksell is such a great teacher and the wealth of knowledge (I hear she was Nicole Fahri’s head tailor at some point) to inspire and encourage me is just what I need! Also she makes me use a different type of fabric for every project which is brilliant as, left alone, I would probably just stick to cotton and easy fabrics! This week we did chiffon and that was pretty terrifying but I learnt even if I cut it like a kid at nursery school (and it really was that bad, actually worse!) then I could still make a wearable garment as long as I was clever and careful with the sewing bit so I have a lovely chiffon top to show you soon!
Anyway… (skip to the end!)… This skirt was made at sewing class for ‘skirt week’ we had a choice of styles but decided this fabric wanted to be a long vintage style circle skirt!
Yuksell showed us a very easy way to cut this without a pattern by folding it lengthways twice to the corners and cutting a crescent at the top for your waist band. I’ll do a tutorial on it soon! Then I used the industrial overlocker to overlock all edges and starting sewing it together using the industrial brother sewing machine (which I love!) As I was putting in the invisible zip, Yuksell kindly made me a waistband on the bias so I had stretch there. Normally I would have cut this the usual way with interfacing so it holds up nicely but I liked the idea of having room to breathe in a circle skirt as mine get rather tight after a good Sunday roast!
It was all going so well till, at home, I put my button hole in the waistband… And ended up with this ‘face’
I was too late/lazy for interfacing now or adding any strengthening so I’ve cheated and just hand sewed over the stitching, closing the gap a bit… Who knows how long it will last. At least I know for next time!
FABRIC : “Apple Crisp : Marionberry Pie” quilting cotton from Backstitch (£12 a metre)
PATTERN : Self Drafted by Yuksell
TIME TAKEN : 2.5 hours
COMMENTS/ IDEAS FOR NEXT TIME : Make sure to strengthen the waistband before putting in a button hole!
Anyway I love this skirt and intend to wear it a lot this spring!
Toodle pip!
