I have a little tutorial for you today…

Using Simple Sew’s Pussy Bow Blouse/Dress free with this month’s Love Sewing magazine I want to show you how to bag out and attach the pussy bow- as it’s quite tricky to work out!

Before I begin follow the pattern instructions to cut out the fabric, sew up all the darts, the shoulder seams and attach the neckline facing so it looks like this:

IMG_3862

  • Pin the Neck Tie piece to the neckline of the blouse/dress right sides together aligning the edges
  • *If you don’t have notches here snip a notch halfway down the long edge of the Tie and line this up to the centre back*

  • Sew this up using a 1cm seam allowance -from shoulder seam to shoulder seam.

You’ll get this:

  • Then fold over the Tie- right sides together and pin this up -leaving out the neckline

IMG_3880

  • Then sew up all around the edges of the Tie stopping (and back tacking) at the neckline and carrying on again after…

This is where you stop!
  • Now you can get your hands in the gap and turn the Tie out the right way!

  • And use a pin to pull out the corners…

IMG_3892

  • Then get that hot steamy iron out and press the whole tie playing special attention to smoothing out the corners

IMG_3894

  • When you get to the unsewn bit along the neckline fold the raw edge under by 1cm and press down – enclosing the raw seams and pin in place.

  • And sew this up… I have used the sewing machine as I have a busy fabric and matching thread so it really doesn’t show but the pattern suggests doing this bit by hand so it’s up to you.
  • If hand sewing – use a small slip stitch to close the gap.
  • If using the machine – sew a straight stitch close to the fold all along the neckline making sure you enclose all the raw seams.

  • Give it another good press… Then your pussy bow is attached!

Now you can carry on with attaching the sleeves, inserting a side zip and sewing the rest of the pussy bow blouse or dress up! if you need any help with this I have done a series of short video tutorials with Simple Sew – Essential Sewing Skills youtube playlist

The fabric is a gorgeous viscose from Fabric Godmother who kindly supplied me with all the fabric for my video tutorials with Simple Sew too!

Hope that was helpful – once you have this skill you can add pussy bow collars to anything! 🙂

Happy sewing,

  1. I really want to make this top but I don’t like the bow – I haven’t actually looked at the pattern pieces yet but can I just leave off the bow? or will I have to draft facings?
Love the fabric by the way!

    1. Hello Kristy! You can easily leave off the bow but will just have to draft a back neckline facing or even a small hem will suffice! Hope that’s helpful- it’s a great pattern. I’m about to finish off the rest and will post pics when I’m done! Xox

  2. Great post! I made this blouse myself, but got confused around sewing the tie. This post would of been very useful for me at the time! Also that fabric is gorgeous.

    1. Hello Abi- I love your version of this blouse and so sorry I didn’t get the tutorial out earlier for you! Take care Xox Gabby

  3. Thank you for doing such brilliant Simple Sew tutorials. Just Made the Simple Sew Bardot Dress following you tutorial and it came out brilliantly, I couldn’t have done it without your help. I’ve been tempted by this one all month. I think I’m ready to give it a go now.

    1. Hello Fiona! Thankyou so much for this comment – it really made my day. Tutorials take a lot of time and effort but I do them to inspire and help others to sew and getting a message like this makes it all totally worth while. Xox
